  • And a Little Child...

    If we all had enough Legos to play with, THERE'D BE NO WAR.

    If marbles rolling down a plastic chute would enthrall each of us for hours, THERE'D BE NO WAR.

    If we each had a swimmin' pool twinkling aquamarine right in the backyard, THERE'd BE NO WAR.

    If we could each watch a kitten lick the hair on the head of a sleeping six-year-old, THERE'D BE NO WAR.

    If we each had a new balloon of our favorite color every single day, THERE'D BE NO WAR.

    If we would regress and relearn the importance of sharing, listening, apologizing and forgiving, THERE'D BE NO WAR.

    If in utero the human embryo would remain female, THERE'D BE NO WAR.

    And if we each could just recall the thrills of being small and new and innocent, WE WOULD HAVE NO MORE WAR.

    And a Little Child...

  • Things to avoid

    If you just wouldn't....

    ...eat cottage cheese while having a conversation with me;

    ...grab the far lane without signaling after taking a left turn;

    ...say "I seen," "He come yesterday," or "It don't" in my presence;

    ...leave your stinking shoes on the living room floor;

    ...blatantly not listen while I am speaking;

    ...simply stare stupidly after I've given you a smile;

    ...walk right through without acknowledging my existence when I hold the door for you;

    ...well then,

    THERE WOULD SIMPLY BE NO CAUSE FOR WAR!

  • In the Back Yard (remembering summer)

    In the Back Yard

    If among our very own pine trees we saw mourning doves duking it out with squirrels over three slices of stale Wonder bread, THERE'D BE NO WAR (elsewhere).

    If we watched our three distinctively different cats chasing anything that moved while we sat in the grass with a 20 ounce Vernors, THERE'D BE NO WAR.

    If the tomatoes were so large and abundant we had to go in the house for a larger basket, THERE'D BE NO WAR.

    If we each watched the whites on the clothesline whip in the wind and transform into ethereal spirits as night descended, THERE'D BE NO WAR.

    If all our children could run barefoot (by choice) on a green, green lawn without fear of broken glass or land mines, THERE'D BE NO WAR.

    And if the fire of fall could simply be permitted to permeate us to our very cores, THERE'D BE NO WAR.
